| June 16th, 2007 | Mike Evans |
Toronto’s new assistant coach has been ignored for the most part. With the Carlos Delfino trade and all, Mike Evans was officially named an assistant coach on June 14th. Alex English and Jay Triano will be returning from last years staff while Mike Evans will help out Mitchell and the rest of the staff for the first time. He is not new to the Raptors’ organization. He was a scout for three seasons prior to this. Evans has head coaching experience, more then Jim Todd. He head coached 56 games for Denver a few seasons back. I believe that he can bring some good knowledge and preparations to the Raptors’ staff. He is a very solid coach, and should be a great addition. Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

| June 13th, 2007 | Jim Todd |
Sam Mitchell’s former assistant coach, Jim Todd, is of to Milwaukee. He got his first NBA job there, and now he will return under Larry Krystkowiak he has added two assistant coaches this off-season already; there is no limit on the number of assistant coaches. It will suck to see Jim Todd go. I thought he was a great assistant coach. If you do not particularly follow the Raptors, he did half-time interviews every game for the Raptors. In my opinion, when he was asked what needs to be improved on for success, he was usually right on. So a new assistant coach may be added, but until then its just Alex English and Jay Triano (former coach of Team Canada). I really do hope Jim Todd can help the Bucks bounce back from their injury plagued season. Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

| June 6th, 2007 | Draft Day Options |
Alright, the draft is coming up. The Raptors have NO picks in this years draft. It is clear decisions have to be made with the franchise. So one of the biggest days on the NBA calendar. What does Toronto do? Obtaining picks? Not for me, I mean really. What can be moved? Mo-Pete? He is a free agent maybe a sigh and trade? Jose Calderon could go coming off a career season. So lets say Toronto packages them together, I say that gets them a pick right outside the lottery about 15-20. And to me at least, that makes no sense, the player may develop to be better, but by doing that your losing two established players. Maybe a second rounder could be packed in somewhere but, nothing to go crazy about. It really stinks not to have a pick in such a good draft, but a trade may be made. Toronto needs a strong, athletic, rebounding, SF. Josh Childress could be a great fit and if Atlanta picks someone at that position he may be moved. I don’t think Bryan Colangelo will sit and let a day like that pass, something will be done, I am just scrathcing the surface. Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

| May 22nd, 2007 | Sam Mitchell |
At a press conference at 2PM today, coach of the year Sam Mitchell and Executive of the year, Bryan Colangelo have agreed on a new contract for the Smitch (Sam Mitchell). The deal was four years, but financial terms were not officially announced; although rumors say he will be in about the middle of NBA coaches salaries. I think Sam did a great job, he brought players from different cultural backgrounds together (fitting that Canada is considered a cultural mosaic, eh?) Example: Bargnani - Italy, Garbajosa and Calderon - Spain, Uros Slokar and Rasho Nesterovic - Slovenia, Parker just played fro Maccabi Tel Avi for a few years. With language barriers to overcome, its hard to believe he tied a record for a franchise high in wins. Going into the year, I was skeptical of where he would be at the end of the year; and even if he was a good fit. The Smitch did a great job and more so then the past, am proud to be a Raptors fan. But In my opinion the question will be, can Mitchell develop his X’s and O’s? He just finished his third year coaching, I think that is what he has to work on. But I believe that he will improve that, too this off-season. In other news the draft lottery is tonight, I hope Atlanta gets second pick, so a certain SF comes available. | May 14th, 2007 | Roko Leni Ukic |
Two years ago, with the 41st pick, Toronto drafted Roko Leni Ukic. Later that off-season Rob Babcock signed Jose Calderon. So by the looks of it Toronto would have three starting potential point guards. Jose Calderon, Rafer Alston (Although it seems like ages ago, he got traded on media day), and Roko Ukic. Although preliminary reports had Roko Ukic coming to Toronto to play for the Raptors. Roko Ukic could be brought in as a back-up point guard for either TJ Ford or Jose Calderon (more likely the second) he has great ball handling skills and would be a great overall back up point guard. If he could be brought in that would make Bryan Colangelo’s life A LOT easier. So they wouldn’t need a player back; and could get more for less. Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

| May 10th, 2007 | The Core |
Has Toronto ever really had two all-stars? I know Antonio Davis and Vince Carter played together, but that was once Davis made the all-star team. But with Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani, this could possibly be one of the best big man duos in the NBA. Early in the season Andrea Bargnani was struggling, admittedly. But at the end of Toronto’s first real road trip, Bargnani started coming out of his shell. And through the year, he has progressed a lot. Bryan Colangelo probably did not pick him thinking he would win rookie of the year, but he probably DID think he would be the best rookie in five years. In the playoffs Bargnani displayed why he deserved to be a number one pick. He was scoring in every form, played good defense (that will improve a she becomes more familiar with the NBA). He really did lift the Raptors a lot and in many games would be my Raptors MVP. This kid will be amazing. Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

| May 7th, 2007 | A Long Summer |
Folks, it will be a long summer for this Raptor fan. Seeing his favorite team lose at the hands of former franchise player Vince Carter in the last few seconds of play buy just literally a few inches. If Jose Calderon had thrown that lob pass only a couple inches higher, it would be out of the reach of Richard Jefferson. The seven game series would have gone back to a rowdy Air Canada Center. But what happens, happens. The Raptors lost, and there is no doubt that it left a bitter feeling in most fans’ mouth. The season was a success. Many steps forward have been made. An Atlantic division championship, Sam Mitchell winning coach of the year, franchise tying wins total; just to name a few. If this off-season even barely resembles the last, the Raptors will be a force. And with Bryan Colangelo at the helm that is more likely then not. The real question is, what will he do? Trade Jose Calderon? TJ Ford? Sign and trade Mo-Pete? Who knows, he is very unpredictable to say the least. That, to me, is what will make the off-season fell so long: suspense. If you don’t particularly follow the Raptors, i’ll quickly go over some of the team needs: a solid defending, good rebounding, athletic small forward. Josh Childress and Andreas Nocioni could fill those roles well. But Childress won’t be a free agent and Nocioni will be a restricted free agent. Jose Calderon or TJ Ford, could be traded, both are solid point guards and are in demand. Calderon would be more likely to go because of TJ Ford’s relationship with Chris Bosh. For me, it would be sad to see any of the players from this years team leave. But what has to be done, has to be done. But, this Raptor fan can’t wait for November next year. | December 23rd, 2006 | Raptors Take OT Win In Portland, Face Sonics Tonight |
The Bosh-Less Raptors faced the Portland Trailblazers yesterday night in an exciting OT epic. The Trailblazers, with Randolph back in the lineup, didn’t seem to be in control until the fourth quarter as they went on a small run and took a 87-80 lead on the Raptors. The Raptors Ford, answered their prayers by scoring four of the 7 points and assisting another. After a Garbajosa tieing game shot, the Raptors had the ball with 8 seconds left tied at 90. TJ Ford took a shot and it bounced off the rim. Garbajosa then threw back in what looked a late game winner, but after frame by frame review, the ball was ruled in Garbajosa’s hands when the light came on. Then came OT, in which Raptor’s point gaurd TJ Ford lit it up from the field and scored 9 points of the Raptors 11 points in the Overtime Q. At the score 100-98 Portland, TJ Ford was foul by Jamaal Magloire, and scored 1 of 2 free throws. Making the score 100-99. After, Fred Jones grabbed the rebound on the Brandon Roy fade miss with 8 seconds left in OT. The Raptors held the ball with 8 seconds left. And now well go to Paul Jones calling the game off the Radio for the Raptors: “TJ Ford takes the ball, drives to the bucket, dishes it to Andrea Bargnani. Bargnani jump shot for the game, GOT IT!! GOT IT!! RAPTORS WIN!! RAPTORS WIN!!, the Toronto Raptors! Steal a win on the road as they defeat the Portland Trailblazers on the road 101-100.“ The Rook, Andrea Bargnani, nailed the game winning jumper with 3 seconds left to go in the game. Ford, who the trailblazers expected to shot the final shot, dished it off the Bargnani who nailed to the game winner right in the mug of the Portland bench. Andrea’s game winner, whom which was the only point of the second half for the rook, finished with 12 points. The Raptors look to face the Sonics and make it a 3 game winning streak on the road. The Raptors, whos road woes record was lifted to 5-12 last night, will look to make it 6-12 tonight. After this road game, the Raptors face a couple of home games against some Eastern/Western conferance mix where they are 8-3 at home. The Sonics game is to tip off at 10:00 PM EST Tonight.
