OKLAHOMA CITY —

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks has preached to his players all season about successfully closing out quarters. The Thunder did that in the third quarter Sunday night and went on to snap a season-high three-game losing streak.

Kevin Durant scored 23 points and Oklahoma City had a 24-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters en route to a 91-75 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

“We talked about that yesterday . to finish strong in all quarters,” Brooks said. “I didn’t think we had a great finish in the second quarter but we did a good job in the second half. We look for that and we wanted to see some progress in that area and I thought the guys really locked in and focused on closing out the quarters.”

James Harden scored 17 points and Russell Westbrook had 15 points, six assists and six rebounds for Oklahoma City, which remained percentage points behind San Antonio for first place in the Western Conference.

“I have a great group of guys that play hard and play together,” Brooks said. “They care for each other. None of us like the fact that we lost three in a row but they never pointed a finger at each other. We were frustrated that we lost but we weren’t frustrated at each other.”

The Thunder never trailed but the game was close for three quarters. Toronto was down 58-55 with 6:05 left in the third quarter, but the Raptors didn’t score again in the period. Oklahoma City then scored the last 12 points of the third quarter — with Daequan Cook’s 3-pointer stretching the advantage to 70-55 in the final seconds of the period — and the first 12 of the fourth to take 27-point lead.

“Guys got into the lane, got to the free-throw line and made great passes and our defense was really good,” Durant said. “Our defense always ignites our offense. We got stops and we turned them into points.”

Jose Calderon led Toronto with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and DeMar DeRozan added 16, going 6 for 22 from the field. The Raptors finished shooting 37 percent.

“We could play them 10 out of 10 times and the results probably wouldn’t be different,” Toronto coach Dwane Casey said. “But like I told the team, I am looking for 10 or 12 guys — I don’t care what the talent level is — to compete, to fight, to scratch, to claw going down.”

After beating the Eastern Conference-leading Chicago Bulls last Sunday, the Thunder lost at home to Memphis and followed that with road losses at Miami and Indiana. Toronto had swept the Thunder last season but Oklahoma City seized control early Sunday.

Durant, Derek Fisher and Cook each made a 3-pointer for the Thunder during a 21-8 run that bridged the first and second quarters. Durant ended the first by going the length of the floor with a rebound and hitting an 8-foot leaner at the buzzer, and Nick Collison’s 17-foot jumper put Oklahoma City up 37-24 with 7:54 left in the first half.

Toronto pulled to 50-43 by halftime and the Raptors continued hanging around, cutting the deficit to 58-55 on a 3 by Alan Anderson midway through the third quarter.

The Raptors didn’t score again until DeRozan hit a baseline jumper as the shot clock expired with 9:09 left in the game — a drought of nearly 9 minutes.

“Those stretches are the ones we’ve got to eliminate,” Casey said. “They started making shots and we had to rest some of our players. The combination we had in there, at some point — DeMar can’t play 48 minutes and Jose can’t play 48 minutes, so we had to get a different matchup in there and those guys took advantage of it.

“No matter who’s on the court, you’ve still got to have attention to detail and understand what is happening. . Those breakdowns can’t happen.”

It was important for the Thunder to carry a double-digit lead into the fourth quarter, Collison said.

“The third quarter, we were able to push it up (the floor) and that makes it a different ballgame,” Collison said. “Going into the fourth quarter down 15 is hard to come back from.”

Toronto cut the cap to 83-67 on a basket by James Johnson with 5:38 left, capping a 12-1 run, but Harden and Fisher each hit 3s to keep the Thunder comfortably ahead. Harden scored 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Serge Ibaka had five blocked shots to go with eight points and six rebounds for the Thunder.

NOTES: Calderon played despite a shiner under his right eye, the result of an inadvertent elbow he took last Wednesday against Philadelphia. He missed Toronto’s game on Friday because of the injury but wore no protection on Sunday. . Toronto F Andrea Bargnani didn’t play in the second half because of left calf tightness. . Toronto finished 8-10 against Western Conference foes this season. The Raptors haven’t posted a .500 or better record against the West since the 1999-00 season. . Oklahoma City is 12-3 after a loss this season and 7-0 in Sunday games.

He finished 5 for 9 from the field after going scoreless in the first half. … The first quarter got off to a sluggish start as both teams struggled with their shots. Over the first 9 minutes, the Pacers shot 39 percent and the Raptors 27 percent as the score was tied 10-10.

Although it had been a charade for weeks, if not months, the Toronto Raptors can finally stop holding out hope for more than 66 games this year.

The Raptors were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Monday evening, falling 103-98 in Indiana against the Pacers.

In typical Raptors fashion, at least this year, they did not simply accept a seemingly inevitable defeat. They trailed by 15 points heading into the fourth quarter, but that deficit was down to just two points a little more than five minutes into the frame. Linas Kleiza had a big quarter to finish with 18 points.

But the Raptors could not get closer as the Pacers made plays in the paint, collecting a few key offensive rebounds to protect that lead. A three-pointer from former Raptor Leandro Barbosa put the Pacers’ lead back at eight points with two minutes to go, virtually ending things.

Danny Granger and George Hill each had 18 points to lead the Pacers, who shot 51% from the field.

Andrea Bargnani missed the game after playing just 13 minutes a night earlier in Oklahoma City. His left calf, which has been bothersome all year long, was tight. The Raptors said they were not playing him for precautionary reasons — and if you cannot show precaution this late in a lost season, you cannot show it at all.

Besides, the Raptors showed it with Bargnani earlier in the season. He missed six games with the first incarnation of the strained calf, and 20 with the second. That time around, he missed more than six weeks.

And, well, the Raptors have struggled without their leading scorer. Coming into the game, they were 7-19 without Bargnani, and 7-21 when you factor in the two games that Bargnani left before the end of regulation. (They won when Bargnani hurt himself in overtime in Utah.)

When Bargnani does play, the Raptors are a respectable 13-18. On a team that does not have much punch to begin with, Toronto cannot afford to be without Bargnani if they have designs on winning. Of course, many fans are hoping that they lose often to wrap up the year, securing as good of a spot in the draft lottery as possible.

Bargnani’s absence was very apparent early on. The Raptors had trouble getting things going offensively, with DeMar DeRozan the only player who was attacking and looking for his own shot. Other than that, there was a lot of passivity. The Raptors scored just 16 points in the first quarter, shooting 37% from the field.

Alan Anderson, on his second 10-day contract, was about the only Raptor to find an offensive flow before the fourth quarter. He hit four three-pointers, finishing with 18 points on the evening. If Anderson were not around for the rest of the season, it would be a surprise.

Perhaps due to the absence of Bargnani, Raptors coach Dwane Casey used Gary Forbes as a backup to starter Jose Calderon instead of either Ben Uzoh or Justin Dentmon, both players on 10-day contracts. A few weeks back, Casey said he was done with the experiment that had Forbes attempting to play point guard, but Casey knew he needed as many minutes as possible from his better scorers. Uzoh played a bit in the second half.

Indiana rested starting point guard Darren Collison, which made it easier Casey to use Forbes. Hill, who is more of a combo guard than a point guard, started in his, with little-used A.J. Price starting in his place. Of course, Price promptly threw two alley-oops to Louis Amundson, so sometimes things are just plain strange.

OKLAHOMA CITY—There is no shame in losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder — plenty of NBA teams do it a whole lot of times in a season — so the fact the Raptors bowed 91-75 here on Sunday night should come as no surprise.

But to coach Dwane Casey, it’s not so much the outcome of games like these that matters, it’s the level of play he sees from his Raptors and he was left dismayed by what transpired at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

He saw capitulation and regression, he didn’t see fight and ferocity and while the better team won, the manner in which the Raptors lost was troubling.

“They’re a great team, believe me,” Casey said of the Thunder, who snapped a three-game losing streak and moved to 41-15 on the year with the win. “We could play ’em 10 times . . . and the result might not be different but like I told the team, I’m looking for 10 or 12 guys — I don’t care what the talent level is — to compete, to fight, to scratch, to claw going down.”

What galled Casey the most was the way the Raptors handled a game-changing 24-0 run by the Thunder bridging the final six minutes of the third quarter and the first 2 1/2 minutes of the fourth.

With a disparate group on the floor — Andrea Bargnani’s night ended at halftime when his calf tightened up, Jose Calderon and DeMar DeRozan were going on fumes before being taken out early in the run — the Raptors simply gave in to the superior talent and stronger will of the Thunder.

And there’s nothing that irks Casey more than giving in, a point he’s been hammering home since he took the head coaching job.

“I just saw giving in to physical play,” he said. “This team is one of the top two teams, top three teams in the league and they’re going to hit you, they’re going to bump you. They play a physical style of game with speed and quickness.

“If you’re not ready for that, whether it’s guarding pick and rolls, in the paint, guarding one-on-one, transition, if you don’t have that disposition, it’s a long night and that’s what hit us in the 20-0 run. Our disposition just totally changed.”

The Raptors had closed to within 58-55 on an Alan Anderson three-pointer with six minutes left in the third. The next time they scored a basket was almost three minutes into the fourth quarter on a DeMar DeRozan jump shot.

The 24-0 run conceded was the second longest in franchise history; twice before the Raptors were victims of 25-0 runs, the most recent being in January 2000, by the then-Charlotte Hornets.

“DeMar (DeRozan) can’t play 48 minutes, Jose (Calderon) can’t play 48 minutes so we had to get a different matchup in and (Russell) Westbrook and those guys took advantage of it,” said Casey.

“No matter who’s on the court, you have to have an attention to detail and understand what’s happening; our system should cover a lot of stuff that they hit us with. Those breakdowns can’t happen.”

Not only couldn’t DeRozan (16 points) and Calderon (19 points) go the whole game, but Bargnani could only go 13 minutes of the first half before an old injury flared up.

“The calf was starting to give me problems,” he said. “(Sunday) morning it was tight and then during the game it was getting more sore.”

Bargnani will be re-examined in Indianapolis to determine whether he’ll play Monday night against the Pacers.

Kevin Durant had 23 points to lead the Thunder while James Harden added 17 off the bench and Westbrook had 15.

“The goal is always open to a great player like that and the moment you relax, he’ll hit you with a three or he’ll make a skip pass over in the corner,” Casey said of Durant, who needed just 14 shots to get his 23 points.

“I thought (Daequan) Cook hurt us with three big threes (off Durant passes) and those attention-to-detail situations are ones we have to close out.”

That’s all the news for today.

PHILADELPHIA — Best team in the Atlantic Division was a nice title for three months.

      The Philadelphia 76ers wanted more.

A winning record for the first time in seven seasons. A top-four seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. All of those goals are slipping out of reach for the Sixers.

Andrea Bargnani scored 24 points and DeMar DeRozan had 18 to lead the Toronto Raptors to their third straight win, 99-78 over the Sixers on Wednesday night.

Back in January, the Sixers thumped Toronto 97-62 en route to a sizzling 20-9 start. Those days are over for the fading franchise. Elton Brand and Jrue Holiday had 20 points in Philadelphia’s eighth loss in the last 12 games. The Sixers (29-25) lost their grip on first place in the Atlantic – and end the season with a stretch of nine road games over the final 11 that could jeopardize a playoff spot.

The good times are gone in Philadelphia and the sub-.500 Raptors were the latest team to roll over the Sixers.

The Sixers’ second-half fade reached a low point in the fourth when they scored only four points in the first 7 minutes of the quarter. They missed 13 straight shots in the fourth and scored only 22 points in the second half.

The seven points in the fourth were a team-record low for a fourth quarter dating back to the 1954-55 season.

“I really don’t have anything,” coach Doug Collins said. “I don’t know what to say.”

Both teams played the night before, but while the Raptors beat Charlotte, the Sixers lost a tough one in Miami.

The Raptors got hot in the fourth, shooting 50 percent, while the Sixers missed 17 of 20 shots. Led by Ed Davis’ 14 rebounds, the Raptors outrebounded the Sixers 46-29.

“I think this has been a tough season on the players, I really do,” Collins said. “I don’t think there’s any question there’s a lot of fatigue. I don’t deny that.”

Bargnani’s soft mid-range jumper stretched Toronto’s lead to 11 points and the Raptors were on their way to their ninth road win this season.

The Raptors had opened up the game on 3s in the third. Alan Anderson snapped a tie game with one to make it 65-62 and Bargnani hit one as part of a rare four-point play for a 73-66 lead. The Raptors took an eight-point lead into the fourth and squashed a Sixers team devoid of the fun and sweet shooting that was so much a part of their mid-winter romp.

“It was just an excellent team effort. Guys stayed together,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. “We had every excuse in the world coming in on the back-to-back, and this team beat us by 30 last time.”

Andre Iguodala left Tuesday’s game against Miami with a left eye bruise and wore protective goggles in the first half against the Raptors. He was scoreless and ditched them at the break when they became a nuisance. He wasn’t much better without them, scoring six points. He was booed when he fired up an airball late in the fourth.

Igudoala has never really been embraced by the fans and didn’t help the relationship when he told Sports Illustrated: “In Philly, it’s not about who you are, it’s about what you do for us. You could be the worst person in the world, but if you score a lot of points or win a championship, you can murder somebody.”

Iguodala said he was just using a “figure of speech” to describe the mood of the Philly fans.

“It’s just the way the media works,” he said.

      Collins brushed off the comments.

“With Dre, he’s just not a guy who’s going to say a lot of warm and fuzzy things,” he said. “That’s just not what he does.”

The Sixers are 9-16 after the 20-9 start.

He didn’t do much of anything in the first half. Holiday made his first eight shots for the Sixers, a run that included a 3 to end the first half for a 56-55 lead.

Bargnani scored seven points in third and was aided by a strong effort out of Aaron Gray was enough to give the Raptors and rare winning streak.

Jose Calderon briefly left after Brand accidentally elbowed him in the right eye. Calderon returned with his eye bandaged — and nailed a 3 late in the fourth. He had 12 points and 13 assists.

“I felt good out there and I wanted to give it a try after the stitched me up,” he said.

      Notes

The Sixers are 8-6 in the second of back-to-backs.

The Sixers have scored less than 80 points in five of the last 11 games.

The Raptors made all 12 free-throw attempts. The Sixers were 7 of 8.

What do you guys think about this.

PHILADELPHIA — Andrea Bargnani scored 24 points and DeMar DeRozan had 18 to lead the Toronto Raptors to their third straight win, 99-78 over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

Back in January, the Sixers thumped Toronto 97-62 en route to a sizzling 20-9 start. Those days are over for the fading franchise. Elton Brand and Jrue Holiday had 20 points in Philadelphia’s eighth loss in the last 12 games. The Sixers have lost their grip on first place in the Atlantic Division — and are in danger of losing a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The good times are gone in Philadelphia and the sub-.500 Raptors were the latest team to roll over the Sixers.

Both teams played the night before, but while the Raptors beat Charlotte, the Sixers lost a tough one in Miami.

The Sixers’ second-half fade reached a low point in the fourth when they scored only four points in the first 7 minutes of the quarter. They missed 13 straight shots in the fourth and scored only seven points. They scored only 22 points in the second half.

The Raptors took an eight-point lead in the fourth and squashed a Sixers team devoid of the fun and sweet shooting that was so much a part of their mid-winter romp.

Andre Iguodala left Tuesday’s game against Miami with a left eye bruise and wore protective goggles in the first half against the Raptors. He was scoreless and ditched them at the break.

“You could be the worst person in the world, but if you score a lot of points or win a championship, you can murder somebody.”

Iguodala didn’t talk before the game. Coach Doug Collins brushed off the comments.

“With Dre, he’s just not a guy who’s going to say a lot of warm and fuzzy things,” he said. “That’s just not what he does.”

Ed Davis grabbed 14 rebounds.

Best team in the Atlantic Division was a nice title for three months.

Calderon returned with his eye bandaged and nailed a 3 late in the fourth. He had 12 points and 13 assists.

“I felt good out there and I wanted to give it a try after the stitched me up,” he said.

What do you guys think about this.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Sixers (29-25) lost their grip on first place in the Atlantic — and end the season with a stretch of nine road games over the final 11 that could jeopardize a playoff spot.

The Raptors got hot in the fourth, shooting 50 per cent, while the Sixers missed 17 of 20 shots.

NOTES: The Sixers are 8-6 in the second of back-to-backs. … The Sixers have scored less than 80 points in five of the last 11 games. … The Raptors made all 12 free-throw attempts. The Sixers were 7 of 8.

TORONTO (AP) Andrea Bargnani scored 30 points, DeMar DeRozan had 20 and the Toronto Raptors beat Charlotte 92-87 Tuesday night, snapping a six-game losing streak to the lowly Bobcats.

Linas Kleiza scored 18 points and Jose Calderon added 11 assists and Toronto won back-to-back games for the first time since road victories at Phoenix on Jan. 24 and Utah on Jan. 25. The Raptors had gone 0-10 in games following victories since those wins.

Toronto, which beat Washington 99-92 on Sunday night, posted consecutive home wins for the first time since Dec. 1 and 3, 2010.

Byron Mullens had 20 points and 14 rebounds and D.J. Augustin scored 18 points and Charlotte lost its eighth straight. The Bobcats have not won since a home victory over the Raptors on March 17.

Derrick Brown had 12 points and Kemba Walker scored 10 for the Bobcats, whose 7-44 record is the NBA’s worst.

Walker started in place of Augustin, who has been bothered by tendinitis in his right knee. For Walker, it was his first start since Feb. 15. That was also the last time Augustin came off the bench, as he returned after missing 11 games with a sore toe.

After his driving dunk cut it to 79-73 with 4:38 left, Mullens was fouled on the next possession and had a chance to cut the gap to four, but missed both free throws.

Ed Davis answered with a layup and was fouled, but failed to convert the three-point play. Charlotte answered with a 6-0 run, cutting it to 81-79 with 2:44 left.

DeRozan stopped the run with a pair of free throws before Mullens and Bargnani twice traded jump shots, first two-point baskets and then a pair of 3s.

After a Charlotte timeout, Augustin hit a 3 over Calderon to make it a one-point game, 88-87, with 40 seconds left.

Toronto gave the ball to Bargnani, who held off Mullens to hit a turnaround hook shot with 26 seconds to go, putting the Raptors up 90-87.

Mullens tried a game-tying 3 but his airball went out of bounds, giving possession back to the Raptors. Bargnani was fouled with 8 seconds left and sealed it by making both free throws.

Charlotte scored the game’s first six points but it wasn’t in front for long. Bargnani and James Johnson each scored seven points in the first, and Kleiza’s jumper with six seconds left gave Toronto a 24-22 lead after one.

Kleiza hit four 3-pointers in the second and Bargnani added eight points to give Toronto a 53-46 lead at the half.

DeRozan scored 10 of Toronto’s 18 points in the third quarter and the Raptors maintained their seven-point edge, taking a 71-64 lead into the fourth.

Charlotte’s Corey Maggette, who had been expected to miss a week with a sore right Achilles, was available off the bench but did not play. Maggette sat out Saturday’s loss at Detroit.

NOTES: Toronto F Gary Forbes was scratched with soreness in his left knee. … Charlotte’s Tyrus Thomas injured his jaw in a collision with Raptors G Ben Uzoh in the final second of the third quarter and did not return. Thomas stayed down and was treated on the court before being helped off the floor and walking to the locker room. … The Raptors visit Philadelphia on Wednesday night, while the Bobcats are in Atlanta. … Rapper Young Jeezy attended the game.

Gotta run!.
