| Raptors welcome Stefanski as VP | |
On Wednesday night, the Toronto Raptors officially announced the hiring of former 76ers general manager Ed Stefanski. Stefanski will become the Raptors’ executive vice president of basketball operations, reporting directly to Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo. Stefanski’s new job is not unlike the one he left behind – reporting to Sixers president Rod Thorn during the 2010-11 season. “Ed Stefanski embodies everything I was hoping to attain when the search began for a top-level basketball executive to join our staff,” Colangelo said in a news release. Stefanski, 57, became the Sixers’ president and general manager in 2007, succeeding Billy King. The Penn grad’s tenure as GM was highlighted by the free-agent signing of power forward Elton Brand in the summer of 2008 and the hiring of head coach Eddie Jordan in the summer of 2009. After a disastrous 2009-10 season under Jordan, the Sixers first fired Jordan and then essentially demoted Stefanski from his role as president, filling the position with Thorn. During last week’s news conference introducing the Sixers’ new ownership group, managing owner Joshua Harris confirmed what most had suspected: Stefanski was no longer with the team. “I am very excited to join Bryan Colangelo and the Raptors organization,” Stefanski said in the news release. “Toronto is a world-class city, and the Raptors fans are strong supporters.” Optimism? The NBA and the players union held a marathon bargaining session Wednesday at a New York hotel. The meeting began at midday and continued late into the night. The NBA already has canceled the first two weeks of the regular season, which was set to begin Nov. 1.

| Raptors hire ex-76ers GM Stefanski | |
The Toronto Raptors have hired Ed Stefanski as executive vice president of basketball operations. Stefanski was hired Wednesday and will report to Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo. Stefanski was fired last week as general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers and had mixed results in four seasons, signing Elton Brand and Andre Iguodala to $80 million US contracts and firing coach Eddie Jordan after one 27-win season. Stefanski hired Doug Collins, who led the Sixers to the playoffs last season, but it was too late to save his job. Before he joined the 76ers, Stefanksi spent nine seasons with the Nets. He was promoted to general manager of the club in the summer of 2004 following a one-year stint as the team’s senior vice president of basketball operations and four seasons as the team’s director of scouting.
