On Wednesday night, the Toronto Raptors officially announced the hiring of former 76ers general manager Ed Stefanski.

Stefanski will become the Raptors’ executive vice president of basketball operations, reporting directly to Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo. Stefanski’s new job is not unlike the one he left behind – reporting to Sixers president Rod Thorn during the 2010-11 season.

“Ed Stefanski embodies everything I was hoping to attain when the search began for a top-level basketball executive to join our staff,” Colangelo said in a news release.

Stefanski, 57, became the Sixers’ president and general manager in 2007, succeeding Billy King. The Penn grad’s tenure as GM was highlighted by the free-agent signing of power forward Elton Brand in the summer of 2008 and the hiring of head coach Eddie Jordan in the summer of 2009.

After a disastrous 2009-10 season under Jordan, the Sixers first fired Jordan and then essentially demoted Stefanski from his role as president, filling the position with Thorn.

During last week’s news conference introducing the Sixers’ new ownership group, managing owner Joshua Harris confirmed what most had suspected: Stefanski was no longer with the team.

“I am very excited to join Bryan Colangelo and the Raptors organization,” Stefanski said in the news release. “Toronto is a world-class city, and the Raptors fans are strong supporters.”

Optimism? The NBA and the players union held a marathon bargaining session Wednesday at a New York hotel. The meeting began at midday and continued late into the night.

The NBA already has canceled the first two weeks of the regular season, which was set to begin Nov. 1.

Philadelphia 76ers executive Ed Stefanski is engaged in advanced talks with the Toronto Raptors to take over as general manager, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Stefanski would move into the franchise’s No. 2 basketball executive job under president Bryan Colangelo. Stefanski, who is in the final year of his deal in Philadelphia and has the GM title, knows he probably won’t be retained after his contract expires, sources said. Stefanski lost his spot as the Sixers’ top decision maker a year ago to Rod Thorn, and now the franchise is waiting for the NBA to approve the team’s sale to a New York investment group.

The Toronto Raptors have narrowed their GM search down to four candidates, according to David Aldridge of NBA.com. The latest name to surface is former Portland Trail Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard, who currently holds a front office position with the Indiana Pacers. Via The Score: “The Toronto Raptors have narrowed their search for a new General Manager down to four… Three names in the mix – Ed Stefanski, Jeff Bower and Dennis Lindsey – were already known to be in the running for the job, but Aldridge’s report includes a new name in former Portland Trail Blazers executive Kevin Pritchard. According to the report, Pritchard is ‘a strong candidate’ for the position. Pritchard was the Blazers General Manager from 2007 to 2010, recording a .500 record or better in three straight seasons. He is currently working in the player personnel department for the Indiana Pacers, but the report indicates that he can leave his position if he obtains a General Manager job with another franchise.”

TORONTO (Reuters) – The Toronto Raptors said on Wednesday they had moved head coach Jay Triano into a consultancy role after he failed to reach the playoffs in his three seasons in charge.

Triano was promoted to head coach early in the 2008-09 season and compiled a record of 87-142 during his tenure with the Raptors, which reached a low point in this past campaign.

After losing All Star Chris Bosh to Miami on a free a year ago they ended the regular season with a dismal 22-60 record.

“This was a difficult decision to make, but after almost three full seasons of observation and evaluation I believe that bringing in a new voice as head coach will accelerate the progress we are looking to make in the coming years,” Raptors President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo told the team’s website (nba.com/raptors).

“I am very pleased that Jay has agreed to stay on and help see through the plan that we have designed and initiated together.”

The Raptors announced Wednesday they will not exercise their option on Triano’s contract. He will be retained as a consultant and a special assistant to president and general manager Bryan Colangelo.

“I have great respect for Jay Triano both as a person and as a basketball mind,” Colangelo said in a release Wednesday. “Jay deserves tremendous credit for developing our young players this past season and our most recent win-loss record does not appropriately reflect his many positive contributions to this organization.”

Triano, an Ontario native, guided the Raptors to a record of 87-142 in his three seasons as coach. He served as an assistant to three coaches before being named interim head coach in December 2008 following the dismissal of Sam Mitchell. The interim tag was later removed and Triano signed a three-year deal in May 2009.

“This was a difficult decision to make,” Colangelo said. “But after almost three full seasons of observation and evaluation I believe that bringing in a new voice as head coach will accelerate the progress we are looking to make in the coming years.

“I am very pleased that Jay has agreed to stay on and help see through the plan that we have designed and initiated together.”

The Raptors finished 22-60 this season, last in the Atlantic Division.

Jun 1, 2011 – The Toronto Raptors have fired Jay Triano as head coach. The Raptors announced the move shortly after Doug Smith of the Toronto Star broke the news. Toronto announced that Triano will remain with the franchise as a consultant to general manager Bryan Colangelo, who recently signed a long-term contract extension.

Triano, the league’s first Canadian-born head coach, took over for Sam Mitchell during the 2008-09 season, and failed to take the Raptors to the NBA Playoffs over his tenure. Triano leaves the bench with a 87-142 career record; he’s been with the Raptors franchise for a decade as an assistant and head coach. He preceded Leo Rautins as the head coach of the Canadian men’s national team, and now serves as an assistant for the U.S. team.

It’s unclear whether replacing Triano was a condition of Colangelo’s extension, and whether the Raptors will consider current assistant coaches Alex English, P.J. Carlesimo or Alvin Williams for the job.

The Toronto Raptors announced Wednesday that they have declined the option on head coach Jay Triano for the 2011-2012 season.

The Raptors went 22-60 in Triano’s second full season with the team. Toronto failed to reach the post-season at any point during Triano’s tenure as head coach.

He took over for Sam Mitchell in February, 2009. Triano served as an assistant under Mitchell, Kevin O’Neill and Lenny Wilkens. He will stay on as a special assistant to president and general manager Bryan Colangelo.

More to come, but here is the full release from the Raptors:

Toronto Raptors President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo announced Wednesday the club will not exercise its option on head coach Jay Triano for the 2011-12 season. Triano will be retained as a consultant to the basketball team as a special assistant to the president and general manager.

The search for a new head coach will commence immediately. There is no definitive timetable for the completion of the search process.

“I have great respect for Jay Triano both as a person and as a basketball mind,” said Colangelo. “Jay deserves tremendous credit for developing our young players this past season and our most recent win-loss record does not appropriately reflect his many positive contributions to this organization.

“This was a difficult decision to make, but after almost three full seasons of observation and evaluation I believe that bringing in a new voice as head coach will accelerate the progress we are looking to make in the coming years.

“I am very pleased that Jay has agreed to stay on and help see through the plan that we have designed and initiated together.”

“I am grateful to the organization for the opportunity to be a head coach in the NBA,” said Triano. “I am proud of the work that I and the coaching staff have done with our young players and feel confident we have laid the foundation for a team that will continue to improve. I look forward in assisting Bryan to deliver a championship team to Toronto.”

Triano was promoted to head coach and signed to a three-year contract May 11, 2009. He finished with an 87-142 record (.380).

Triano served as an assistant to three coaches before being named interim head coach December 3, 2008 following the dismissal of Sam Mitchell.

A native of Niagara Falls, Canada, Triano became the first Canadian born and Canadian trained coach in the NBA when he joined Lenny Wilkens’ staff for the 2002-03 season.

Gotta run!.
