The reason they need to assess their options there before they pursue trades is clear: the team needs to know what value their 13th pick has as an asset to the team (in terms of the talent that they’ll have to pick from) versus the value the pick has to other teams (in terms of what kind of return the pick can net in a trade, possibly in tandem with other players).
